How to Prepare Your Home for Photography
Simple, highly effective steps to make your rooms look spacious, light-filled, and thoroughly inviting on camera.

When a professional photographer visits, their goal is to capture the architectural essence, light, and flow of your home. However, the camera lens has a way of magnifying small, everyday details that our eyes naturally filter out.
A single charging cable, a sponge by the sink, or a pet bowl can instantly distract a buyer's eye. By taking a few hours to prepare each room, you help the photographer focus entirely on capturing the finest qualities of your property.

Room-by-Room Preparation
The Art of the Kitchen & Living Space
Kitchens and bathrooms are the most critical spaces for presentation. Clear every worktop completely to reveal your counter space. Put away washing-up liquids, sponges, tea towels, and everyday appliances like blenders or breadmakers.
- •Hide all wires, extension leads, and phone chargers.
- •Remove all magnets, notes, and calendars from the fridge.
- •Vacuum carpets and polish hard floor surfaces until they shine.
Letting the Sunshine In
Photography is, at its root, the capture of light. To make your home feel radiant and airy, open all shutters, blinds, and curtains. Pull them as wide as possible to frame the windows rather than blocking any of the view.
- •Turn on every single lamp to create a warm, layered glow, even in the daytime.
- •Ensure all lightbulbs match in tone (warm white is best) and replace any blown bulbs.
- •Clean the glass! Camera lenses will pick up streaks and dust on windowpanes when shooting towards the light.
The Crucial First Impression
The front exterior photo is almost always the hero thumbnail on property sites. It's the split-second hook that makes a buyer click. Ensure the path is entirely clear and inviting.
- •Park all cars down the street or completely out of sight.
- •Roll wheelie bins into the garage, shed, or side alley.
- •Tidy up loose cables, hoses, lawnmowers, and children's garden toys.
Creating Sanctuary & Comfort
Bedrooms should feel calm, luxurious, and peaceful. Smooth out bedsheets and duvets completely — wrinkles look surprisingly prominent on camera. In bathrooms, the key is mimicking a boutique hotel.
- •Clear everything off dressing tables and nightstands except a simple lamp or a single book.
- •In bathrooms, remove all shampoo, shower gels, soap bottles, and toilet rolls.
- •Put toilet seats down, remove bathroom mats from the floor, and hang fresh, ironed, plain-colored towels.
What to Expect on Shoot Day
A quick overview of how the photography session flows.
When the photographer arrives, they will walk through the entire house with you first. They'll study how the sunlight is hitting each room to plan the order of the shoot.
The photographer may tweak the angle of a chair, adjust a curtain, or move a plant slightly to balance the shot. Don't worry, they are just compose-tuning!
A standard shoot takes between 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the size of the house. It's usually easiest if pets and children are taken for a walk or stay in a quiet room during the shoot.
